Li-Chun Hsiao

Taiwanese saxophonist Li-Chun Hsiao graduated from National Taiwan University with a major in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Psychology. In 2010, he was admitted to the Conservatorio di Musica “N. Piccinni” di Bari in Italy, where he earned the Diploma di Secondo Livello (equivalent to a master’s degree) in 2012, becoming the first Taiwanese saxophonist to receive a performance diploma in Italy. That same year, he was awarded a scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in performance at The Hartt School of Music in the United States, where he graduated in 2014. He then continued his career in Connecticut, engaging in both teaching and performance.
From 2015 to 2019, Mr. Hsiao worked as a music educator in various regions across China, specializing in band teaching and teacher training. He taught in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Hubei, Shandong, and Guangdong. In 2018, he conducted the Nanjing Youth Orchestra Alliance Wind Band at the Sydney Opera House in Australia. He has also performed with the Beijing Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra.
A passionate advocate for contemporary music and chamber music, Mr. Hsiao has premiered works by prominent composers from Taiwan and abroad, including Duo Revisited by Hilary Tann (USA), Black Paintings by Piet Swerts (Belgium), Alice in Wonderland by Wan-Yun Liang (Taiwan), and Suite Baroque Taïwanaise N°1 by Chang-An Chen (Taiwan). Since 2017, he has, with the MIT Saxophone Ensemble, premiered several Taiwanese compositions, such as Fugue and Benedictus by Hao-Yuan Chiu, Hengchun Ancient City - Memories of Lonkjouw by Hsuan-Hung Chou, Fantastic Variation on 4 Melodies of Then Yí-hièn by Chang-An Chen, and The Breath of the Land by Wan-Yun Liang.
In 2019, Mr. Hsiao co-founded Waldszenen reed quintet, Taiwan’s first Reed Quintet, alongside several outstanding Taiwanese musicians, continuing to explore the limitless possibilities of the saxophone in chamber music. Since 2020, he has participated in the Smart Repertoire collective commissioning project led by American saxophonist Joshua Thomas, resulting in over ten original works. Recent commissions also include a Concerto for Baritone Saxophone by Chris Evan Hass (USA).
Mr. Hsiao studied saxophone under Chia-Hsiu Tsai, Marco Albonetti, and Carrie Koffman, and received conducting training from Glen Adsit and Edward Cumming. He is a current member of the MIT Saxophone Ensemble, Waldszenen Reed Quintet, YaFon Saxophone Quartet, and Bardo Saxophone Quartet. Mr. Hsiao exclusively performs on Yanagisawa Saxophones since 2015.
