カリフォルニア州出身。

サクソフォーンプレイヤーであり、フルートや作・編曲、バンドリーダーもこなし、長いキャリアを持つ。

現在では自身のMel Martin Band、Mel martin Big Band、Benny Carter All Star Tribute Bandを率いて活動。

2008年　Mel Martin Band "Where The Warm Blow"をリリース。
ピアノにDon Friedman、ギター Brad Buethe、ベース Robb Fisher、ドラム Jeff Marrs、そしてスペシャルゲストにパーカッション John Santos、ギター Barry Finnertyを迎えている。
